The Grandstand at Racetrack Valley, Death Valley
The Grandstand is a rock outcropping that rises above a playa
in Racetrack Valley (a part of Death Valley National Park.)
According to lore, early European/American
immigrants imagined that Native Americans raced horses around the
flat playa while spectators watched from the rock outcropping.
This fanciful idea notwithstanding, the names
Racetrack Valley and Grandstand have
stuck with us.
For a good overview of the area, see
this description of Racetrack Valley in Wikipedia.
