Smoke Over the Southern Sierras, California

Smoke Over the Southern Sierras, California

The smoke you see here, hanging over the Southern Sierras, is likely from the Vista fire, which was burning at the time I took this photo. (See MODIS Active Fire Detections - August 25, 2007.)

In early August, large swaths of the Mojave had been choked by smoke blowing in from the Zaca fire in the Los Padres National Forest — two-hundred some-odd miles by car from where this photo was taken.
